The short answer
Wall fixings pull out because the fixing was chosen for the wrong wall. Plasterboard, dot-and-dab over blockwork, lightweight thermal block and solid masonry all behave completely differently under load, and a plug that is perfect in one is close to useless in another.
What is behind your wall matters more than the bracket
Most modern internal walls are either plasterboard on timber or metal studs, or plasterboard dot-and-dabbed onto blockwork. Both feel solid to knock on, and neither is solid.
Dot-and-dab is the one that catches people out. There is a cavity of 10–25mm between the board and the block, so a standard plug tightens against the board and levers it away from the wall behind. It holds for a while, then a crumbling circle of plasterboard appears and the shelf comes down.
Lightweight thermal blocks in newer homes are another trap. They are excellent insulators and comparatively weak in the way a fixing needs them to be strong, so a generic brown plug shears out the block around it under load.
The usual causes of failure
- The wrong fixing for the substrate — the single biggest cause.
- Dot-and-dab cavities defeating standard plugs.
- Lightweight aircrete blocks needing specific fixings.
- Hitting the void between studs and relying on plasterboard alone.
- Underestimating leverage — a TV on an articulated arm exerts many times its own weight at the top fixings.
- Curtain poles taking sharp yanking loads across a wide span, often into an already-weakened lintel area above a window.
- An oversized or wobbled pilot hole, so the plug never grips.
Why one more attempt in the same hole is a bad idea
Once a fixing has failed, the hole is larger and the surrounding board or block is damaged. Going back into it with a bigger plug tends to fail faster, and each attempt takes more of the wall with it — which turns a mounting job into a plaster repair.
The other reason to be careful is what is inside the wall. Cables run vertically and horizontally from sockets and switches, and pipework is often chased into stud walls, particularly near bathrooms and kitchens. Drilling on the assumption that a wall is empty is how a shelf becomes an electrician's call-out.
Identifying the construction, locating studs and services, and matching the fixing and its load rating to both the wall and the actual leverage involved is the whole job. Anyone can put a bracket up; it staying up is the part worth paying for.

Yes, when the bracket is fixed into the studs themselves or into properly rated purpose-made fixings, and the bracket type is matched to the screen weight and arm reach. On dot-and-dab, the fixing needs to reach the blockwork behind.

It sounds hollow in patches and solid in others in a rough grid pattern, and it is very common in homes built from the 1990s onward. It is worth confirming properly before drilling, because it changes the fixing entirely.
